What is Reading Renaissance (also known as Best Practices in Accelerated Reader)? |

Reading Renaissance is a literature-based reading curriculum that is utilized in the 5-1 classroom. A Renaissance teacher motivates students by giving them feedback, setting goals, and helping students experience success. They instruct students with skills lessons and confer with students regularly. They monitor students by reviewing reports generated by a learning information system (Accelerated Reader). They intervene by quickly diagnosing problems and helping with difficulties.
A large amount of uninterrupted time is used for silent independent reading in Reading Renaissance. Reading research consistently demonstrates the importance of allowing time for students to read independently. Silent reading allows the additional benefits of individualization. Highly individualized, it is perhaps the only way to consistently tap into each student's optimal zone for language improvement. That is why each student has a "zone" to guide them in their novel choices.
Reading Renaissance students work at their individual optimal level. Each student has a reading contract that is brand new each quarter and specifically developed for them. The goals of the reading contract are a reflection of the data gathered each preceding quarter, the students' scores on the STAR computerized testing system that is used at Forreston Grade School, and teacher observation and judgement. |
