Use These Magic Words

"I don't know." Don't give your child the answers. Finding the answer means learning to do research.

"Look it up." Sending her to a dictionary or almanac encourages the use of reference materials.

"Let's find out." Joining her in the search for information allows you to show her how it's done.

"What do you think? Show her that you're interested in her thinking. She'll have to decide what she does think, and she'll have to state it clearly.

"Good job." When she does a good job, tell her so.

"Nice try." Nobody's perfect. She's not going to get everything right, but when she makes an honest effort, let her know that you recognize it and admire her for it.
