       In class read aloud, 5-1 is reading A Family Apart by Joan Lowery Nixon. The class is really interested in the book. The story is about six kids from New York who ride on the orphan train to the west.
       In social studies, 5-1 is learning about famous explorers. These explorers include Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, Bartolmeu Dias, and Vasco da Gama.
       In language arts, 5-1 is learning how to use verbs and helping verbs. We are also learning which verb or helping verb is correct in a sentence.
       In reading, 5-1 is playing hot potato vocabulary. Hot potato vocabulary is a game. You have a piece of paper with a vocabulary word on it. You have to say the vocabulary word in a sentence correctly. If you say it correctly, you can give the word to somebody else. But if you don't say it correctly, you have to keep the word and try again later.
       In science, 5-1 is learning about the planets. We are using compasses to draw 2-D scale models of the planets.
A 5-1 student is drawing a planet model for science using a compass.
In social studies, 5-1 is learning about famous explorers.
A student "teacher" is reading A Family Apart to 5-1 students.
